The Berkeley has made a habit of spurning tradition – the original 19th century building was closed down in favour of a more modern, purpose-built property that was completed in 1972 – and whilst many of the capital's five-star hotels still favour the old-style elegance and stiff upper lip of Victorian Britain, The Berkeley is a decidedly more modern affair.
Where it maintains its own sense of history is the not in the architecture or foundations of the building but in the sublime service it has provided for over a hundred years. True to form, the hotel offers a distinctly unconventional approach to afternoon tea. Served in the appropriately themed Caramel Room, with its low-lighting, chocolate-coloured wall coverings and snappy faux-crocodile fabrics, this is a far cry from the brightly lit tea parlours you may have visited before. The chic, contemporary design of the room combines with cutting-edge cakes and pastries to create the ultimate 'fashionista's afternoon tea.'
If you're looking for something a little more filling, Marcus Wareing at The Berkley offers an exclusive fine-dining experience that is like no other. Sit back and take in the rich and vivid interior design of David Collins whilst indulging in the culinary wonders of one of Britain's most talented chefs. Or for something less formal, Koffman's delicious French is a wonderful option for pre or post-theatre dining.
Best for:
The Caramel Room offers a choice of 18 teas, whilst the selection of stylish cakes, crafted by the likes of Burberry is changed seasonally to reflect the catwalk's latest trends.
Did you know?
The hotel features the only rooftop swimming pool in London, although plans are to close it in the near future to make way for more rooms.
