An export from England’s colonial years in India and contemporarily codified as a game for the rich, Polo is in fact an all-access sport. Why not embrace a rather exclusive English tradition and try a spot of Polo? We can’t promise you a case of Veuve Cliquot but we can promise an invigorating time on the back of a horse.
Down at Ascot, they run a fantastically well-constructed ‘Discover Polo’ Lesson. During the two hour introductory lesson, Ascot’s experts will lead you, in a group lesson with other new polo players through a graduated programme. Novices will learn the rules and tactics including the polo swing and how to ride on a polo pony. These lessons include a mini-game or in offical terms, a Chukka. After the lesson, for a little bit more money, people are invited to take part in a further, longer instructional Chukka. Incidentally all students are put on an animal specifically geared to the individuals riding experience, however limited that may be. The organisers claim that 65% of their apprentices are in fact non-riders.
Set in the really beautiful surroundings of the Surrey countryside with top of the range facilities, you really can sample the high-life. A morning dabbling in this upmarket game promises a challenging yet safe experience. Highly-trained staff and veteran, well-behaved ponies ensure a very enjoyable day of polo pleasure.
Booking is essential. They are run over the weekends on the whole but it's best to give the Academy a call regarding availability.
