Location Map of Hornfair Park

Hornfair is a large park close by Charlton park and Charlton Lido, with formal gardens and plenty of different activities: football, camogie (women's Gaelic sport), basketball, bowling and tennis, there's even a children's paddling pool (in the summer holidays only). The park gets its name from a pagan fair described in the early 18th century as consisting of 'a riotous mob' wearing horns of different kinds on their heads who marched from Deptford through Greenwich to Charlton. At the fair they sold ram's horns and toys made of horn, apparently even the gingerbread figures had horns. The Fair reached its heyday in the time of Charles II in the 1660s when thousands of people used to attend. Next to the park, on Shooters Hill Road (near to the pedestrian footbridge), is an old pet cemetery and Memorial Garden.
