Shepherd’s Market has been a discreet hub of the illicit trade, even before Jeffrey Archer and Monica Coghlan were caught creeping about its passageways. Of course, these days it’s as famous for its fine eateries as its bordellos - and the Innes Lounge is trying to break that historical massage parlour mould.
Pass through the turquoise doors and inhale the tranquil ambience of clean open space. Scattered with smart leather chairs and chunky, low, wooden tables, the upstairs is a café area serving a suitably wholesome range of teas and smoothies. You’re welcome to pop in whether you’re having a treatment or not.
Therapies on offer encompass Indian head massage, reflexology and reiki amongst others. A robed masseuse takes your details, before accommodating you in comfy slippers, and leading you to the basement treatment rooms. Down below the subtle lighting and soothing Oriental music puts you instantly at ease as you settle into one of the special massage chairs. The session of Japanese acupressure we tried out lived up to expectations – I was so relaxed I was falling in and out of consciousness and my back still feels liberated two days later. Innes Lounge also does a neat line in aromatherapy oils and scented candles too if you want to take something of the experience home.
