It’s a knotty task pigeonholing this versatile drinking establishment. Situated on the cusp between trendy Kensal Rise and not-so-pleasant Kensal Green, Astons has a foot in each. Inside it’s slickly done out in the polished, but slightly insincere, attire of modern bars with all the resultant leather sofas, chandeliers and mirrors. It’s a spacious place so finding a seat never poses a problem. At weekends it fills up with a hip, young crowd, DJs belting out energetic sets. On the other hand, they give a hearty welcome to families. On a summer’s day hordes of excitable children clambering over the benches in the gorgeous beer garden are a common sight. On the food front, Astons has joined the gastro revolution; the kitchen delivers a varied menu of culinary riches. Their steaks, fish and Thai dishes are consistently delicious. But remember to book a table, more and more people (not just locals) are cottoning on. Nearby attractions: Kensal Green Cemetery.
