Before we even got here we'd heard good things of Green and Red, the Mexican cantina opposite the ever-brilliant Redchurch. (The only pub in the land to serve Sierra Nevada Pale Ale by the pint.) Luckily, the meal lived up to our high expectations, with memorably good food and a barrage of delicious booze to keep the mood buoyant. Bar manager and Tequila expert par excellence Christian will happily guide you towards some excellent cocktails. Margaritas are perfect, not too strong or perhaps just very slyly balanced. At any rate they go down a treat. Green and Red's menu is drawn from national favourites and the cuisine of the Jalisco province, the home of Tequila. The dishes are mild and moreish. Kick off with some delicious grilled shrimps and salsa or save yourself for mains which arrive in huge mounds with sides of cabbage and salsa with tortillas. A Birria, or slow-braised lamb shank cooked in beer and cloves, is a lean, eye-opening delight. Or, for a very traditional Mexican dish, try a slow roasted pork belly with chilli and avocado salsa, which can be cooked for up to six hours - a smoky, flavour-packed delight. If you've got room for dessert, bananas and chocolate sauce or a rice pudding go well with a couple of tequilas and beer chasers. The place gets pretty crowded in the evenings and you're encouraged to linger for drinks in the convivial atmosphere. We can't recommend a better night out in this corner of the city than a few pints in the Redchurch and some classy tequila and Mexican grub next door at Green and Red. A delightful addition to an already excellent local scene.
