Among the best of London's many theatre pubs, the Landor offers a whole night out, as well as a 220 capacity auditorium. Come in for pre-show drinks, head upstairs to enjoy the performance, tuck into some hearty food during the interval and then get in a few between curtain call and last orders.
The pub itself would be worth a look, even if it weren’t for the theatre. It’s traditional but not in a pokey, claustrophobic way, with loads of wooden chairs and tables. The main room is festooned with a bevy of oars, bottles, baskets and a sizeable collection of tankards hangs over the bar. It attracts a mixed bunch: locals, YPs who’ve ventured off Clapham High Street and, of course, theatre types.
The pub’s food unquestionably deserves a mention. All made from organic, free-range ingredients, it is both delicious and good value for money. The burgers are particularly noteworthy. Behind the bar they’ve got a liberal, distinctive selection of drinks including Spitfire and Irish cider on tap.
If you’re not into theatre, or insufficiently entertained by the chitchat of your friends, there’s still plenty to keep you amused: a big screen shows all the sport, fruit machines gobble change and three pool tables mean everybody gets a game. On Sunday nights there’s a pub quiz.
It’s not situated in the most salubrious of areas but don’t let that put you off. The Landor is a great pub with tasty grub and an array of entertainments.
