Tucked off the main drag of Upper Street towards Highbury and Islington Tube lies this little gem of a drinking den, Public House. From the moment you enter the long, low-lit interior you sense it will be time worth spent: the décor is splendidly showy, without being overly ostentatious; faux antique tables and chairs of all different sorts and sizes have been carefully placed together giving the place a distinctive, personal feel and creating numerous hubs around the room; interesting photographic prints of urban architecture and old mineshafts cover the walls sparingly; the music is eclectic, on the pulse but mercifully not so loud as to impede conversation. The drinks menu is simple but wide-ranging, offering a fine selection of wines, some excellently inventive cocktails (£7.50) and bottled beers from all round the world. Ordering from the appetising snacks menu is no let down too: potted venison terrine stars alongside smoked duck slices and bar staples such as anchovy fillets, maris piper wedges and pints of king prawns. An array of cheese and cold meat platters, served on shards of tree trunk, are also available - uncomplicated, but tasty. To top it off, the whole place is immaculate (especially the pristine loos) while staff are both personable and gregarious. The people behind Public House clearly know what they're doing - and while opening an upmarket bar in an area that seems saturated with such ventures may seem like a gamble, it is one that deserves to pay off. Spending a couple of hours in this original and welcoming 'boutique pub' is a thoroughly worthwhile experience.
