Literary lovers will feel very much at home at the Swan & Edgar, Marylebone's boozer with a bookish theme. Not only is the bar made up of piled high book spines but there are regular poetry readings, book signings, quizzes and societies adding a learned air to this particular pub. The bar does also serve its traditional purpose - aiding in the consumption of alcohol. Well, we often find drinking only adds to the understanding of hefty tomes that can otherwise seem out of our intellectual reach. But it's not all 'War & Peace', 'Mills & Boon' readers are welcome too and there are books of every genre to enjoy while sipping on a pint or indulging in some shepherd's pie. The Swan & Edgar (taking its name from the bygone Piccadilly Circus department store) is brought to you by the same people behind the small but perfectly retro bar/tea house Bourne & Hollingsworth (another well known name in retailer heaven), in Rathbone Place, Fitzrovia. With this Marylebone venture, they've taken on a larger premises as well as London's literary luvvies - it's a novel approach (sorry) and one that we think works well.
