If London Bridge is the new Shoreditch (as some people claim) then The Arches was always going to have to branch out from its days as XXL gay nightclub. While bear-friendly XXL still runs its nights on Wednesdays and Saturdays, The Arches has taken on a few of The End's previous nights, including Chew The Fat!, and now hosts We Fear Silence on Fridays, a night of seminal deep house that proves the place caters to an audience beyond the former bear-heavy crowd. Located just a few minutes walk from London Bridge tube, The Arches consists of four huge railway arches divided into three rooms of music, two spacious (and cheap) bars and a large undercover garden area for smokers and those wishing to cool off. A state-of-the-art NEXO GEO soundsystem means the music is of utmost quality, while the backstage crew use the space with expert precision to bring out the best in visual and laser lighting shows. Such an expert set-up offers more to the discernable dance floor dweller than the nearby Shunt Vaults, whose arches are often left bare, dark and dank. With many central London clubs now closed down, The Arches looks set to pick up the baton and usher in a new era for the capital's ravers.
