A couple of years back, in 2005, the Barley Mow became The Hill and changed from an average local (with a dodgy clientele) to a gastropub complete with decked garden, a sure sign of the gentrification of Greenwich. The emphasis is on the food - you can only get one kind of beer (Adnams bitter) at the small bar at the front. Drinkers won't be encouraged to linger too long on the uncomfortable chairs either. But that's not to say the place is empty; the former down-at-heel crowd has been replaced with locals who want to eat decent gastropub food without having to trek into town.
