Wine bars in the UK were given a bad name in the 1980s but places like this show us how it should be done. Both the wine bar and shop next door sell over 275 different types of wine from across the world with a particular emphasis on France, Italy and Spain. Quality ranges from every-day drinking at under £5 to vintage classics and includes organic and biodynamic varieties; quantity is by the glass, bottle or case. Opened in 2005 by Brett Woonton and Charlie Young - who met at Italian specialists Liberty Wines - and Elena Ares, it's frequently busy-to-packed, especially at lunchtime, and the location close to Smithfield Market, opposite St John's attracts a sophisticated city crowd. You can also sign up for wine courses with wine writer and Master of Wine Tim Atkin and sample over 60 wines at twice yearly 'Portfolio' tastings. A private room for 30 is also available for hire.
