Built in 1694 on Craig's Court, just south of Trafalgar Square, Walkers of Whitehall was originally an Irish bank, home to the 'Bankers of the British Army', with cashiers upstairs, and the offices and vaults below. Now a restaurant and bar, you can sip on barrel-aged negronis and smoked maple old fashioneds under the beautifully arched and embossed pewter ceiling of the former bank vaults in the basement. The dining room, with its elegant banquette seating and an open plan kitchen, offers dishes like beef short rib with chipotle glaze, charred cauliflower with tahini, cumin lamb leg with z'atar and flatbread, and cod with pine nuts and parsley. Tucked away down a cobbled side street, the building retained much of its historical character despite an extensive refurb in 2016. And, if the rumours are true, there's secret entrance to the Treasury Building and The Home Office right beside Walkers.
