In spite of its name, its Victorian pub exterior and an interesting collection of Greenwich memorabilia, the Spread Eagle is not a pub, or even a gastropub, but a serious French restaurant, with Gallic staff, crisp white tablecloths, and prices to match. Though the ethos is traditional French, with buttery sauces, strong kicks of vinegar and garlic, and lots of seafood, the menu is full of modern touches and imaginative combinations, with a very impressive seven-course tasting menu on offer for those who want to try their most daring dishes. With an unassuming appearance and an out-of-the-way location, they've managed to retain the feel of a local restaurant, but this is French cooking that can compete with all but the best Central London kitchens.
