For the past three centuries, Ascot has been a centrepiece of the British racing season. Its most celebrated event, Royal Ascot, is also an essential part of the aristocracy's social calendar. The queen attends (Ascot is just six miles away from Windsor Castle), and the third day - 'ladies day' - is as much a fashion show as a race meeting, with the rich and famous (and the 'Made in Chelsea' set) out in force to show off their most glamorous headgear. The high-tech glass-roofed grandstand - completed in 2006 and a far cry from the original wooden building which held 1,650 people - is a distinctive sight in UK racing. There is a race meet in most months and longer events throughout the summer. Royal Ascot takes place around the third weekend in June, while the course's most prestigious race of the year - the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes - is run in July.
