Bounded in by surrounding office buildings, Postman's Park's appeal lies in what it symbolises as much as how it looks. Located just north of St Paul's Cathedral, the garden is a peaceful and tranquil refuge in the midst of Londons bustling financial district. More than that though, the park contains hundreds of tributes to people who have made the ultimate sacrifice losing their lives to save others. The brainchild of painter and philanthropist G F Watts, the park's centrepiece is a sheltered wall, embossed with hand-lettered Royal Doulton tiles, each one commemorating amazing acts of bravery. Time taken reading each plaque (many of which have stunning Art Nouveau borders), following each tragic yet inspiring tale, is time well spent. Pop in for some quiet contemplation after visiting St Paul's or any of the City's other attractions. Incidentally, the park's unique name stems from the regular stream of postmen who used to visit the green space while on breaks from the General Post Office that bordered the south side of the garden.Best for:
Acts of bravery, memorials, peace and tranquility, quiet contemplation.
