If you find the River Cafe and Roussillon a little beyond your price-range - or just unacceptably full of snooty Chelsea foodies - you might want to try this unpretentious bistro, which offers a similar selection of traditional Mediterranean food at around half the price and a tenth the pretentiousness. From the same stable as Sonny's in Barnes, this no standing on ceremony attitude helps to cement their reputation for providing excellent food, served up without any fuss. It is a big place, but divided into four dining rooms so it still feels like a cosy neighbourhood restaurant, an impression helped by the cheery staff and straightforward menu. Fish and seafood are the main focus - the salt cod was particularly spectacular - but there is also an ever-changing seasonal menu which includes plenty of sturdy meat and game dishes. 11 Abingdon Road images
