Angel is full of exotic eateries, many of them ridiculously overpriced, and so Afghan Kitchen comes as a spice-infused gust of fresh air. 'Kitchen' is indeed the correct word, for the cramped layout, although set over two floors, can hardly be described as a dining room. That, however, adds to the place's simple charm - something which is reflected in the cuisine: an unchanging menu of four meat and four vegetarian dishes. We opted for the delicious chicken in yoghurt (succulent, well marinated cuts of breast in a bright green tangy sauce), a great lentil dhal (yellow and heavy, this offsets the chicken wonderfully) and a portion of fluffy pilau rice. Other dishes include a lamb and spinach stew (which our neighbouring guests on the shared table ate with apparent glee), a fish and potato dish, large shards of pumpkin in an electric orange yoghurt sauce and stewed aubergines. All of it looks fabulous and the vibrant colours are something to cherish - as are the prices (all dishes cost between ?4.50 and ?6 - credit cards not accepted). Side orders of Afghan bread are on the menu from 7pm (we ate early so missed out) and a take-away service is available if you don't fancy cosying up to the many regulars. Probably the best way to experience this tiny Afghan haven on bustling Islington Green is to go early with a few friends and order a bit of everything. It won't set you back a lot, the intense flavours will delight the palate while your plate will closely resemble an artist's palette.
