An upper class American diner that's about as far from a greasy spoon as Madonna on a macrobiotic diet - well, they do serve steak and chips but you get the idea. Despite the illustrious Mayfair address and the smart art galleries to either side, the food at Automat is reasonably priced and the atmosphere buzzing. Often full to capacity, service can suffer as a result but there's no denying its popularity. There are two very different seating options. Secure one of the booths at the front with railway carriage type seating and you get a cosy compartment to yourselves. Alternatively, make your way through the saloon doors out the back and there's a lighter, brighter feel thanks to a glass ceiling and floor-to-ceiling window in place of a back wall. Either way, the choice of food is all-American with the menu including eggs Benedict, macaroni cheese, burgers and three types of steak which come in generously sized portions, naturally. Brunch US-style wouldn't be complete without waffles and pancakes, here they're served with strawberries and cream or maple syrup, just like back in good old US of A.
