It may be nestled among the 'Chinese' restaurants of Chinatown but Bar Shu is no ordinary Chinese restaurant tempered to suit British tastes. Instead it specialises in spicy Sichuanese food as it's meant to be - with photos on the menu the only nod to non-Chinese speaking diners. When it first opened in 2006, the critics called it, "the most exciting restaurant to open in London in an age" (Jan Moir in the Saturday Telegraph) and Evening Standard writer Fay Maschler said that it had changed the face of Chinese restaurants in the capital. That same year Bar Shu won Time Out's best new restaurant and it has continued to impress in the intervening years. It's the authenticity that makes Bar Shu stand out with dishes like shredded chicken (bang bang jiding), bean curd with spring onion oil (foo jook), and spicey prawns appealing to the adventurous diner. Soup pots, kang pao chicken and mapo tofu with rice come highly recommended while the spicy noodles (tantanmien) offer a good smoky yet spicey flavour. One word of advice: look out for their spice ratings - which are given in the number of peppers next to a dish - Sichuan food takes its spicing seriously.
