Benares is among the very best Indians in town. The restaurant opened with some fanfare, a head chef recruited from Tamarind and interior decoration worthy of 'House and Garden'. The stylish restaurant, first rate service, cool clientele and high prices all indicate a top-class establishment, but it would all be meaningless without a truly world-class talent in the kitchen: chef Atul Kochhar is the author of 'The Indian Essence Cook Book' and is one of a very small number of Indian cooks to have won a Michelin star. His strong and stylish cooking has made this one of the places to eat in London. From the moment popadoms arrive with chunky, freshly made chutneys, this restaurant exudes superiority. Each dish is sumptuous, carefully prepared with strong flavours in original and effective combinations. The service and setting are the height of luxury, but it is the exquisite food that sets Benares apart.
