Bertorelli's is something of a London institution but one which manages to keep up with current culinary trends so thankfully, it is still as good as ever. The Floral Street branch, with its plush velvet chairs and intimate lighting, has the air of a set from The Godfather and, even when it's busy it feel remarkably private. Offering Italian standards with a modern twist is a tricky balancing act - these favourites are so familiar, that it's hard to improve on them. Bertorelli's starter plate for two did not disappoint. Piled high with prosciutto, bresaola and creamy mozzarella it was a feast in itself and, of course, works as a great romantic dish because it's perfect to share. Unlike so many similar dishes, the meats and cheeses were of a very high quality - no plastic hams here. My partner's buttery smooth and fresh asparagus ravioli with prawns and scallops was excellent, while my breaded veal escallop was cooked to melting tenderness. The high standards continued into the desserts - Tiramisu was pronounced by my guest as heavenly while the my sorbets were fruity and cleansing. A pricey restaurant, but one that justifies its popularity.
