This smart, airy dining room attached to London's oldest synagogue is, surprisingly, the only kosher restaurant in the Square Mile. We're not sure where New York's top financiers used to go when they needed a fix of gefilte fish with horseradish, but Bevis Marks now attracts a bustling international crowd of well-heeled Jews and gentiles at all times. The major elements of kashrut cuisine are well represented, with chicken soup with matzo balls, chopped liver, and excellent lean salt beef all appearing on the menu. There are also some more ambitious - though perhaps less successful - items from the Mediterranean, reflecting the Portuguese and Spanish origins of the synagogue. The puddings are remarkably good, especially considering the constraints of a dairy-free kitchen.
