The most obvious thing to say about Bistro 51 is that it's a hotel restaurant, so we'll get that out of the way straight off. A classic bistro menu from across the Channel is dotted with standards from the British Isles for a little variety, and there's a heavy nod towards seafood.
The kitchen has decided to do everything the classic way, ignoring any posturing towards modernity. From the modestly presented, solitary crab cake to the understated tang of the prawn and scallop brochette encircled with ginger mayo, our starters were delicious simply-cooked fruits de la mer. Steak au poivre and duo of duck breast and confit might sound unadventurous, but executed to the letter, they pleased us well enough. Not to mention the bona fide French fries - long, crispy and light in colour - just like I remember from childhood holidays. We finished sharing a trio of vanilla, pistachio and coffee brûlée - a simple variation on a classic theme once more.
The décor inside isn't that fabulous - lemon painted walls and framed vintage French posters endeavour to lend it some Gallic charm, but are rather held back by the dodgy carpet and some rather ill-advised elevator music. Nevertheless, I was strangely enamoured with the heavy cutlery and weighty, long-stemmed wine glasses, and there were plenty of other diners adding some well needed atmosphere.
Looking for ambience? Hate hotel dining? - don't even cross the threshold. However, if you appreciate well-cooked, timeless French cuisine it's worth a try, especially when you consider the excellent value set menu.
