From the same group who brought us the media trendy Charlotte Street Hotel and the Soho Hotel comes the Haymarket Hotel – and its in-house eating place, Brumus. Tim and Kit Kemp's Firmdale Hotels have the hallmark of sophisticated chic about them, at least partly due to Kit's exemplary interiors. At Brumus, Kit has clearly had some fun with the colour palate. The miss-matched hot pink and red scheme covering the walls and seating can't fail to catch the eye. Add to that umbrellas hanging from the ceiling and you have one very busy backdrop. After a shaky start on the food front the Northern Italian menu has greatly improved, a delicious if expensive grilled Dover sole being top of our recommendations. At the other end of the spectrum, in terms of price at least, is the Haymarket hamburger with all kinds of classic roast meat dishes in between. Just leave room for the ice creams and blackberry and apple crumble served with custard. Situated next to the historic Haymarket Theatre and overlooking the busy Haymarket, it's well positioned for a theatreland outing. The bar is a bit of fun too.Brumus images
