This popular, basic pub serves some really great food. Everything is cooked on the premises from proper ingredients and the smell that drifts out of the kitchen signals genius at work. The fishcakes are legendary and the seasonal menu is extremely strong on simple but elegant grub of the best kind. Prices are fair, there's a great atmosphere and the place is packed with satisfied customers. There's one problem - the bar staff. They seem to think they're as wonderful as the cooks, when in fact they're sloppy, slow and occasionally rude. However, dealing with these slobs (who improve their manners considerably if they recognise you) is well worth the bother for an honestly brilliant pub meal.
Notes: Booking advisable for lunch.
