Credited with serving the best espresso in London, if coffee is your thing you really can’t walk past Caffe Vergnano 1882 without popping in. A glass counter, neat wooden tables, black and white photos, and clean cut décor all make the café appear fairly “de rigeur”, on first sight. However, look beyond the standard set-up and looming impressively from the back of the counter is Caffe Vergnano’s piece de resistance - a gleaming, chrome Elektra Belle Epoque Q1-C espresso machine. Exceptionally rare, the Belle Epoque represents pure coffee heaven and as a result drinking an espresso here is like swallowing down an aromatic slice of velvet. Supplied on a pewter tray, with a glass of water to cleanse the palate before diving in and a small bitter chocolate, this is a café that takes coffee seriously and presents every cup with pride and perfection. Every macchiato comes complete with the perfect rosetta on top and not a hint of bitterness. You’ll go in for one espresso, leave having drunk four, and return soon for more.
Best for:
Excellent espresso and the Elektra Bell Epoque Q1-C espresso machine.
