With a prime spot on one of Soho's main thoroughfares, Carom restaurant is well-placed to serve up authentic Indian cuisine to the many thronging tourists, theatre-goers, shoppers and workers in the area. Named after an Indian spice, and also an Indian billiards-type game, Carom is in very capable hands: Chef Balaji Balachander was raised and trained in his hometown of Chennai, and has worked as executive chef at Michelin-starred Benares. Food here spans the Indian continent, so you can choose from dishes like Kerala fish with curry leaf, mango, coconut and ginger sauce. The restaurant also excels when it comes to the meat dishes, with slow braised lamb that practically melts in the mouth. The dessert menu is a welcome surprise with offerings such as sticky toffee pudding with cinnamon ice cream and chocolate fondant with white chocolate chilli hearts. There are also dishes of various sizes, allowing diners to pick, mix and share, making it the ideal venue either for a full meal or a quick drink-after-work stop-off with a few nibbles at the ultra-cool lounge bar.
