This restaurant at the boutique Milestone Hotel serves very modern British food in very traditional British surroundings. Original Victorian finishings like the old oak fireplace and lead latticed windows give and old fashioned feel to the place. The excellent and discrete service, too, is reminiscent of a time when people would doff their hat as a means of greeting one another. The food, luckily, is far from old school. A tian of smoked salmon and trout with chive creme fraiche and caviar might be followed by pot roast supreme of guinea fowl with celeriac and parsley mash, morel mushroom sauce. Classic desserts like creme brulee and warm chocolate tart are expertly done and a superb way to finish. Catering for the kind of affluent visitor who can afford to stay at the Milestone does mean that prices are on the steep side but are well worth it. The traditional Sunday lunch fixed price menu offers not only good value but a classic English dining experience.
