Chez Gerard is a real carnivore's favuorite, and is the restaurant of choice for Londoner's who want a relaibly excellent steak frites. Visiting this branch, we thought we would go out on a limb and not have anything made of beef (though we were unable to resist ordering a bowl of their crisp, delicate fries).
We opened with camembert baked in the box, a simlpe-sounding dish that is actually fraught with dangers for the careless chef. On our visit, it was just right - soft enough to scoop in great sticky lumps onto bread and crudite, with none of that salty, plasticky feeling that it can get if overcooked. A 'brick' of sea bass - similar to 'en croute' but with a thinner layer of pastry - mingled goreously light pastry with firm, fresh fish.
This is one of the most attractive restaurants in the chain, divided in to a Brasserie with an appealing 1930s decor, and a more formal restaurant. Service was efficient and unobtrusive.
Another winning restaurant from one of London's best small chains.
