The original Chicago rib shack was a favourite with the well-heeled children of Knightsbridge (including Princes William and Harry) and an ironic treat for their parents. Reopened in a new venue, and under new management, it has retained the original's sense of fun, knowingly tacky American diner decor, and artery-furring retro menu. Vast racks of ribs, grilled chickens, and bowls of pulled pork come dripping in sweet, sticky barbecue sauce; onion rings are replaced by an entire loaf of batter-covered fried onion goodness; a starter of potato skins turns out to be an entire baking potato stuffed with bacon, processed cheese and sour cream. Don't make the mistake of refusing the bib you're offered at the start of the meal. The Chicago rib Shack has had some of the worst reviews of any London restaurant opening we can remember, but the families who were packing the place out on our visit were clearly having a whale of a time. Fun decor and fun food are aimed perfectly at children and childish adults, while grown-up diners can enjoy excellent cocktails at reasonable prices, a fine selection of US beers and friendly, smiley staff. If you want authentic American barbecue cuisine, you can visit the sainted Bodeans, but if you want to enjoy yourself, The Chicago Rib Shack is as good as anywhere in the area.
