Concrete is an apt name for a cafe/bar adjoining the Hayward. Anyone who's been to this part of the South Bank will know it's famous for its 1960s modernist architecture and here its played up to best effect. Concrete also marks a more individual approach than the distinctly un-artistically minded Starbucks which previously occupied the site. Company of Cooks, who also has the refreshment franchises at Kenwood House, the Roundhouse and Kensington Gardens, has been brought in to give the place a more relaxed day-to-late night vibe - it's open till 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. With the gallery only opening until 10pm on Fridays, Concrete isn't just about fuelling those who want to take a laid back break after seeing the latest in contemporary art. You can come here even after the Hayward is closed. But those with an eye for art will appreciate the difference. In the evening, bread and oils can be snacked on while brooding over a pint. More substantial meals are also on offer - think hot pots and pies - as well as civilised champagne cocktails and liqueurs.Concrete images
