Strictly Sri-Lankan cuisine, this unostentatious restaurant is a rather exotic addition to West Hampstead. Traditionally, Sri Lankan cuisine has a fiery reputation. However, at Elephant Walk they have softened their dishes for the delicate Western palette. Should the fearless among you wish to confront a natively hot curry, the restaurant will be happy to spice things up a little - you only have to ask. The menu is a colourful collection of regional specialities. For starters we recommend the Ulundi Vadai, the Lamb Spring Rolls and the Spicy Chicken Cutlets. The Ulundi Vadai, a famed Sri Lankan rarity is a treat. Shaped like a doughnut, the distinctive taste of lentils, onion and ginger make it deliciously moreish. The cutlets and spring rolls are ideal for the less adventurous. For a main course, the Kerala is a fantastic fusion of chicken, cashew nuts, green chillies and saffron all tossed in a thick creamy sauce while the Buriyani has more of a surprisingly spicy kick to it. The food was really very tasty and refreshingly economical for a West Hampstead eatery. The interior, however, meets all the voguish expectations of the area. We loved the simplistic furnishings and dark brown tables delicately lit by flickering candles. The grand illustrations of elephants throughout the restaurant add an intoxicating Eastern charm to the establishment. The staff were delightful and faultlessly attentive.
