Have a fika at Fika on Brick Lane and you'll be having a break from the usual routine. With this being the only Swedish café / restaurant among the curry houses of Brick Lane Fika surely lives up to its name. On the menu you'll find that Swedish food is more than pickled herrings. If you're in search of a substantial meal you can expect your main course to be served 'on the plank' which means your great big prime sirloin steak, sourced from Smithfield market, comes on a oak wood board. This comes served with grilled tomato and mashed potato around the edge which has been gently grilled and pressed (so there's no dairy). There's also a veggie 'planka' - a healthy portion of chick peas, beans and hearty veg. Traditional Swedish delicacies including herring and gravadlax are here too, ideal lighter bites or starters, with the salmon fresh from Billingsgate. A welcome break from the spicy side of Brick Lane life.
