The first thing that strikes you at the Mandarin Oriental's restaurant is the spectacular view over Hyde Park, and the cleverly designed split level dining room which allows every table to enjoy it. The next thing that strikes you is sheer terror at a menu that charges you fifty quid a head to enjoy such eccentric combinations as pigeon and pistachio, turbot with pork raviolo, and vanilla rabbit. Stay your panic for a moment, though: Foliage may have won its Michelin star for a relentless commitment to eclecticism, but this is cooking that owes far more to genius than madness, and though there are plenty of surprises on offer, few are unpleasant. In fact, most dishes offer simple, complementary combinations of flavours - however unconventional they may be - and immaculate presentation. With its perfect location, this is one of the better Michelin-starred experiences in London.
