The Royal Family's favourite food hall has undergone what can only be described as a sympathetic refurbishment - by which I mean it's retained every ounce of its charm and lost none of its very Britishness. Although 2007 marks 300 years of trading, this historic department is more than a museum piece; it personifies pre-war gentility with its gilded furnishings, chandeliers and marble pillars. The shop is famed for its fantastic, largely thanks to its royal patronage, and its upmarket food hall is piled high with gastronomic delights. So it follows that The Fountain restaurant is equally sublime, pairing the best of British tradition on the menu - including its famed Welsh rarebit - with opulent surrounds. Walls are tastefully decorated in Fortnum's aquamarine, seats are covered in plush upholstery and the whole room is centered on a horseshoe shaped bar. This is the place for ladies lunching, landed folk and tourists in search for a taste of olde England. Utterly delightful.
The Fountain can be approached through the Ground Floor Food Hall or directly from Jermyn Street. Entrance is via Duke Street before 10am.
