Gail Stephens, founder of Baker and Spice and The Bread Factory - a small artisan bakery supplying London's top chefs - is the name behind GAIL's, a wonderful cake and bake shop with branches in Hampstead and Notting Hill. When Gail teamed up with Ran Avidan and Tom Molnar - who quit their management consulting jobs - in 2005, GAIL's on Hampstead High Street sprang up, bringing us high quality, chemical-free baked goods. This delightful store on Notting Hill's fashionable Portobello Road followed in 2006. The result is the antithesis of the plastic wrapped supermarket bought bread that most of the UK uses to make their sandwiches. Free of chemicals, preservatives and additives, with GAIL's simple flour-and-water ingredients you can certainly taste the difference. The straight-from-the-oven delicacies are beautifully laid out so you can choose from freshly baked muffins or potato and rosemary sourdough. Special events have seen their goodies served up at the Serpentine's summer pavilion and at their annual garden party at Oriel Place, Hampstead.
