This superb Hungarian restaurant in the heart of Soho is a traditional meeting spot for the political classes. Intrigues and deals have been hatched in here ever since it opened before the First World War. As you’d expect in a meeting place of politicians, there is an excellent wine list. The food is delicious and authentic, rich delights of the kind that suit a lengthy, indulgent meal. Hungarian and Transylvanian food employs a lot of rich sauces, sauerkraut, beetroot, and delicious, strong meats with a particular emphasis on game and foie gras. The Gay Hussar is pricey but the atmosphere, superior food and excellent service provide a complete dining experience that’s well worth your money.
