Back in the sixties the Giaconda Cafe at 9 Denmark Street was where David Bowie met his first backing group, The Lower 3rd. Now, under the ownership of Australian chef Paul Merrony it's graduated from cafe to dining room of repute serving honest food with a 'French-ish' flavour. It's a meat-heavy menu with choices including roast chicken, ham hock hash or grilled rack of lamb alongside more adventurous cuts like grilled calves liver or tripe braised with chorizo, smoked paprika and butter beans. In the same vein, the signature dish is a starter of boneless '(almost!)' and crisped pigs trotters with eggs mayonnaise. It's far from flashy - the bare white walls and plain wooden tables attest to that. But the good thing is it doesn't try to be.
