Located on the ground floor of the St Giles hotel (one of London's maddest modernist buildings) Hakuba's low-ceilinged dining room has a classy, polished minimalism. There are some lovely booths for romantic dining surrounding a simple, spacious main room, and a buzzy bar whose signature cocktails have great kicks of ginger and chilli. Sushi was plain, expertly crafted, and impressively fresh. Elegantly presented main courses came from a menu that mixed Japanese staples with imaginative signature dishes. Portions are small, but this fits into the general sense of a chic spot to drink, socialise and graze at the start of a night out, rather than a place to settle down for a blow-out meal. There's a surprising dearth of good mid-priced Japanese restaurants in the West End, and Hakuba does an excellent job of filling the (large) gap between Nobu and Kulu Kulu.
