Just round the corner from Fujirama - winner of 2005's LondonTown.com Award for Best Budget Restaurant - does not sound like the best place to open a Japanese restaurant, but Ichiban Sushi seems to be holding its own. While its rival is a busy, bustling, kitschy place, Ichiban has aimed a little more upmarket, with clean, basic decor, and a menu focus on sushi.
And what good sushi it is! Very, very fresh fish, with chewy, dashi-rich rice. We also had some excellent Agadashi Dofu (tofu soup), and if it was all a little pricy for this part of London, it certainly didn't break the bank. Service was a little slack, but thoroughly charming, with plenty of banter between the staff and the regular customers.
Not quite as special as Fujirama, then, but certainly a very decent sushi restaurant that should ensure that its local rival keeps on its toes.
