The original Japanese Canteen opened its doors in St John's Street, Islington, in 1995 and was one of the first Japanese restaurants to offer inexpensive and accessible canteen style dining in London. The success of this venture led to the first takeaway canteen which opened in Thayer Street, W1 in 1997. There are now have several Japanese Canteen shops throughout the city bringing traditional Japanese dishes including sushi, bento boxes and dumplings to the lunchtime crowd.
