Joanna's has been lording it over this sleepy suburb for 40 years now. Taking its name from the rhyming slang for the featured piano that was often playing, Joanna's soon became a staple fixture locally and remains very much part of the community renowned for both its warm hospitality and excellent food. Husband and wife co-owners, John and Christina Ellner, and their son William continue to push the boundaries of neighbourhood dining. The food seems to be at its best when it sticks to simple brasserie fare. Seared tuna with warm potato salad makes for a strong-tasting starter, which could also stand in for a main course. Burgers are so large and juicy that they're impossible to eat politely, while maple-cured pork loin had that dry, charcoaley flavour that matches perfectly with mustard. The excellent wine list is very reasonably priced, the service is efficient and friendly, and the food is surely the best for miles around. They also offer a simpler menu at lunchtime, and a brunch from 10.30am. Its appearance mixes polished wood with the foodie prints of a friendly neighbourhood eatery while some smart pieces of design and an open kitchen are more suggestive of a flashy West End restaurant.
