Karpo, a restaurant owned by the Megaro Hotel and housed within a muraled King's Cross building which "looks like a self-consciously hip Dutch youth hostel" (Jay Rayner), shares its name with the Greek Goddess of fruits of the earth. The aim at this all-day brasserie is to serve great, honest food with an abundance of flavours in a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. The source sustainable produce where possible and change the menus regularly to reflect availability and seasonality. Typical dishes include Southern-fried quail with celeriac slaw - "the sort of dish description I defy anyone to pass up", Fay Maschler - and shrimp and grits - a dish recommended by the Evening Standard's restaurant critic. It's all cooked by American-born chef Daniel Taylor, who has cooked with Rowley Leigh and Jeremy Lee, and served at refectory-style tables and benches overlooked by a living wall. One duff note in an otherwise enjoyable meal had by Jay Rayner was the desserts; the horrendously burnt and bitter tarte tatin "made us pull the sort of face toddlers confect just before bursting into tears".
