This elegant Baroque building doubles up as a wonderful pizzeria and champagne bar. Originally a grand hotel built in the 1860s by Auguste Kettner, chef to Napoleon III, it spreads over two huge floors. Over the years a fair few personalities have passed over its impressive threshold, including writer Oscar Wilde.
It became a pizza restaurant about 50 years back and now it’s owned by Peter Boizot, founder of the Pizza Express chain. It could be described as their flagship outlet, which is reflected in the quality of the pizza; the prawn one is a true delight.
Right in the middle of Soho it’s ideal as a pre-theatre venue or the start to a big night out.
Tap away under the chandeliers in the champagne bar downstairs as the live piano player knocks out lilting jazz standards one after another. The theme is old-style splendour but the prices won’t break the bank.
A number of private dining rooms are available for hire.
