With the sainted Satay House just down the road, there's stiff competition for any new Malay restaurant opening in this area - especially one whose name means 'afraid to be second best'. Kiasu, however, is easily as good as its rival and has a completely different selection of food from the enormous variety produced in the Malay peninsular. Here, the focus is on the magnificently rich and sticky Chinese elements of the cuisine, with slow-cooked rendang beef, glutinous rice stir fries, and madly sweet desserts among the specialities. It's unusual and vastly satisfying, and though the functional dining room and messy dishes aren't much to look at, you'll come out feeling pleasantly stuffed, and not much lighter in the wallet.Kiasu images
