Locally sourced, seasonal food is the environmentally friendly focus at this well known restaurant on the corner of Kings Cross Road and Acton Street. It's fame was helped, in part, by BBC series the 'Urban Chef' (April 2006) which followed head chef and owner Oliver Rowe - and in so doing gave Rowe an equivalent audience to such well known chefs as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay. There was a real buzz when this restaurant, the second of Rowe's eateries, opened. His first, Konstam café has been serving up reasonably priced, healthy dishes just a few doors down (at 109 Kings Cross Road) since 2004. The décor at his latest open-kitchened restaurant converts what used to be a pub into a light and airy space with artfully arranged silver beaded strings cascading from the ceiling. But Rowe's genius is in making ingredients sourced within the M25 taste far more glamourous than their origins suggest. Hertfordshire chicken livers, slow pot-roasted pork belly in Tower Hill honey and cheese from Norbury were all proclaimed a joy by my fellow diners. Thankfully, we can confirm that this is one London restaurant that lives up the hype.
