"If you were looking for the quintessential grand London restaurant right now, L'Oranger and its lunchtime clientele, would probably be it", wrote Jay Rayner in The Observer over a decade ago back in 2001. And not much has changed at this St James's establishment since. Describing it as "comfortable", "and just a little pompous", Mr Rayner cited the wood panelling, Georgian-style half-domed ceiling and "a bit of plumpness about both the cushions and the diners" as notable characteristics of this famous 'French Provencal' restaurant. Before dishes like lobster ravioli you get an amuse-bouche and although prices are unashamedly expensive they are worth it for a treat or special occasion - after all, this is Mayfair. They also have a delightful courtyard which is worth reserving on a warm summer evening.
