On any other South London high road, Lambert's would be a quite extraordinary find. Muted, sophisticated decor and elaborate modern Brit/Med cooking with immaculate seasonal ingredients are a pretty rare find this far south of the river. Balham is inexplicably spoilt for choice when it comes to top notch restaurants, and we can perhaps afford to be a little more critical and Lamberts does perhaps try a little too hard to impress: in general the best items on the menu were the simplest, with immaculate frites the highlight of our meal. But this is just being picky, really. Though it may not be quite as remarkable as Chez Bruce, it's fifteen quid a head cheaper (give or take), easier to get to, and a great addition to South London's current restaurant hotspot.
