19th century Danish lightship with renowned restaurant and attracting dockside setting.
Possibly one of the most romantic restaurant settings in London, Lightship Ten is ideal for intimate tete a tetes a deux or cosy group get-togethers. Built in Scandinavia in 1877, this “concept restaurant” does exactly what it says on the tin and does it exceptionally well. A conventional ship performing the job of a lighthouse, this particular lightship has now become a beacon on the London restaurant scene. Moored in pretty St Katherine’s Dock alongside swish, decidedly more modern sailing devices, Lightship Ten looks plain and rather ordinary from the outside. Inside, however, it’s warm, inviting and totally unique. Heavy, dark timber dating back to the ship’s early days on the seas of Denmark, envelopes the ship from floor to ceiling, endowing the vessel with a reassuring solidity. The wealth of wood also serves to muffle any extraneous sound producing a soothing peaceful ambience. Small riverside booths for two or four come complete with portholes, while delicate blobs of warm orange light emanate from the low ceiling to further enhance the intimacy. The food is an excellent blend of Scandinavian and modern British cuisine, with a separate oyster menu providing an additional sea-faring twist. As you sit and eat, lulled by the gentle rocking of the hull and the aromatic smell of timber, it’s not difficult to float away to the Danish coast where the boat was moored during the Second World War having been seized by the Germans. History, intimate surroundings, a unique ambience and fine food make this an excellent choice for a special weekend meal with a difference.
Dockside setting, timber booths and portholes and oysters and romance.
Did you know?
During the Second World War the ship’s deck was covered in cobble stones to protect the crew from British machine gunfire.
